Cybersecurity is currently a top health industry issue that can affect even the smallest organization. Trustees have a duty to monitor and oversee risk related to the unauthorized access and use of patient information and other sensitive data while complying with a wide range of laws and regulations, including HIPAA, to secure electronic protected health information and other patient records and information. Prepare for and manage such risks by making cybersecurity an integral part of information governance and risk management. This presentation will cover best practices for how a board can prepare for an inevitable data breach and what steps can be taken to mitigate risk. A copy of “A Legal Guide to Privacy and Data Security” along with a data breach toolkit will be provided to each attendee.

The work of board service is stressful and littered with indecision, worry and anxiety. Board members deserve to have their work be structured in a manner to allow for confident debate and decision making. Has the following statement ever crossed your mind? “Our board meetings are six hours long! We talk and talk and never get to a level of confidence to make a decision!” Having a well-designed committee structure creates an environment for sound board function. A good committee structure anchors people in areas of high interests and skills, breaking down the work into meaningful components. This session will take you through the discernment process to know what committees you need and will offer the key policies and practices necessary for a committee structure to work at its highest level. Whether you are a 501(c)(3) or a public nonprofit, there are ways to make light work of difficult board responsibilities.

Health care policy has been at the forefront of the national discussion, and with new appointments to both Health and Human Services (HHS) and the Centers for Medicare and Medicaid Services (CMS), it will undoubtedly remain there. With many signals coming from Washington as to the future direction of health policy and with the new leadership at HHS, there is strong belief 2018 will see an escalation in changes. This session will outline some key priorities of the administration, HHS and CMS; what the impact on providers may be; and key strategies that should be considered as a result of these changes.

When things are going well, it is easy to slide by the performance appraisal timeline. Then, when things are not going so well, not having documentation causes us to hesitate and not hold an executive accountable. Similar frustrations are seen by CEOs who express concern that they do not know the expectations or how their work is viewed by their boards. This session outlines a step-by-step process that is easy for board leaders to use in managing the important work of a CEO evaluation.

Clearly, a hospital’s board of trustees is charged with oversight responsibility for overall operations of the hospital; however, when it comes to compliance, risk management and quality functions, it can be challenging to clearly define the role of the board and set expectations for the board’s evaluation of and interactions with management and medical staff. This session will discuss best practices in hospital governance, with particular focus on identifying board-level responsibilities for quality improvement and mitigation of risk, proper delegation of duties to management and staff and recommended approaches to reporting and communications across the enterprise to promote compliance.

Using the insights, experiences and passion he has applied to over a decade of building an “Optimal Healing Environment” (OHE) at Grinnell Regional Medical Center, Linden will share clear and replicable examples for creating a culture of health and healing. In this session you will explore why creating an OHE in your facility can create a culture that supports health and promotes both safety and quality, while at the same time reduces cost and improves the work-life balance for employees. Creating an OHE is a new way of thinking about how health care is delivered — by taking into consideration all the factors that influence the optimal health of the patient, from the outer environment to the inner environment. With reform upon us, Linden will inspire you to recognize that investing in a healing culture is the way to make a lasting impact on the quality of life in your community.
